Territory of "Marca Fermana"

mare marche panoramica 4
The Residence Casabianca, in Casabianca di Fermo, Marche, with its apartments and bungalows, is a great little oasis of calm in the middle of the sky, the sea, nature. The horizon is open, free, without limits. The beach is wide, deep, with a crystal clear sea. Not far away, Lido di Fermo, with its services, its premises, its fun. And then, a little further on, Fermo, rich in history, culture and beauty.

Fermo, industrial, commercial and agricoltural city is situated on the highest part of a hill between the lower valleys of the rivers Tenna and Ete Vivo, where stands the great Cathedral dedicated to the Assumption. It is 6 km from Porto San Giorgio and 40 km from Macerata, and is almost equidistant from Ascoli Piceno (67 km) and Ancona (68 km). It is divided into two parts: the historic area, built on top of the hill and around Sabulo, remained the same over the centuries in its medieval origins, and a new area.

The territory of the town extends for 124 square kilometers and includes 5 km of coastline south of Porto San Giorgio (the resort Marina Palmense) and 4 km of coast to the north (Lido di Fermo, Casabianca and Lido San Tommaso).

History of Fermo

mare marche pinacoteca
Fermo has very ancient origins, various archaeological excavations have brought to light, in three different areas, funerary material dating back to the ninth and eighth centuries BC and to the type proto-Etruscan (Villanovan culture). After becoming a Roman colony in 264 BC, Fermo participated in various campaigns of the war, and its inhabitants, in 90 BC, acquired Roman citizenship.

It passed under the domination of the Lombard kingdom and then became a free commune in 1199. Fermo was later ruled by a succession of Lords, during which it became the capital of the so-called “Marca Fermana”, a large portion of land which stretched from the Musone river to Vasto (Chieti), and from the Apennines to the sea.

During the Napoleonic period, was the capital of the Department of Tronto, one of the three departments of Marche (the other two were those of the Metaurus and Musone).

In 2004 was found the Province of Fermo, which had already existed until 1860, when it was abolished by a decree of the government Cavour (decree which was never enacted into law) and merged with the province of Ascoli Piceno.
